Just thread through the cushion cover out into the pom pom and back in again until the pom pom feels secure. Admittedly, it came with no instructions so I was like WTF? How does this work? So i've created the little picture guide below on how to use the bizarre little item:Īttach your pom poms to the cushion cover with a needle and thread. I brought a pack of four size pom pom makers from Amazon for £1.97 including delivery. If you don't fancy sewing your own cushions from scratch, then buy a cheap cushion cover from Ikea and add texture to it, like creating this super fun pom pom cushion above! First thing you'll need to create this cushion is a pom pom maker. Cushions also provide the ideal opportunity to add a fabric/print that you love, but can't afford to add much of in your home (like getting a sofa re-upholstered in a House of Hackney print, or curtains made in Sanderson fabric, which can cost from £50-£100 a metre!) You can buy cut offs, samples and fat quarters on Ebay and at fabric warehouses of expensive fabrics and make your own cushions, which is EASY! Trust me - you don't have to own a sewing machine, you don't even have to be an expert sewer, it's literally all about sewing a few straight lines together. You know how you can wear a different style outfit each day depending on how you feel? Well cushions act like your sofas clothes - you can add and remove them depending on how you want your room to look that day. The easiest way to add texture and layer your room is with the home furnishings, so we are talking cushions, rugs, throws, curtains and so on.Ĭushions are amazing as they can change the dynamics of an interior scheme, but are completely non-committal. Texture comes from using different fabrics- wool, velvet, sheepskin and laying means dressing the room to be visually stimulating. Whenever I read an interview with a interior designer that I love, the thing that I pick up most from them is that texture and layering are key when it comes to styling a room. To finish, turn right side out and stuff with polyfil or pillow form, then sew opening closed. 6 – Place other 15×15 inch square on top, then sew around edges, leaving about 6 inches open on the left or right side (not the top or bottom). NOT SHOWN: Scoot the ruffles in a little closer together, so you have 1/2 inch of open space on the left and right side of the square.ĥ – Pin ruffles down, then sew a straight stitch down the center of each ruffle. 4 – Repeat with the four other strips as shown. Part of the strip should extend past the top and bottom of the square. 3 – Zig zag the strip back and forth, making a ruffle, until it looks like the photo. Take your first strip and lay it diagonally out from the top center of the square, as shown. Here’s a close-up of the zigzag ruffle pillow.įor this one you’ll need 1 yd of 36 inch wide wool felt and matching thread (you can find wool felt on the bolt at Joann Fabrics – it doesn’t need to be 100% wool, just have some wool in the blend).ġ – Cut out 2 15×15 inch squares, and 5 strips that are 3 inches wide and 36 inches long. It makes more sense when you’re actually doing it □ Pin very well, then sew all the way around, as shown by yellow dots. Place rectangles on top of the square, right sides down, one matching up with the left side of the square and one matching up with the right, to form an “envelope”. 6 – Place your trimmed square down on the table, right side up. Repeat with the other fabric piece, but this time folding in from the left. Fold the right side in (wrong sides together) 5 inches, so you now have a 15×10 inch rectangle. Slightly overlap trim, then cut off any excess.ĥ – To make the envelope opening on the back of the pillow cover, grab one of your other fabric pieces. 4 – Continue sewing on trim until you get back to where you started. 3 – When you get to a corner, miter the trim. Just place one end of the trim along one side of the fabric square, pom poms pointing in and right side of fabric up, and start sewing, about 1/4 inch from the edge. I found it was actually easiest to do this without pinning. 2 – Take one of the 15×15 squares and sew the trim all the way around it. Here’s how to make it:ġ – Cut 3 15×15 inch squares of fabric (if your fabric has shrunk enough that you can’t quite fit 3 squares, cut one square at 15×15 and two rectangles at 15×13 or so). To make a cover for a 14 inch pillow form you need 1/2 yard of fabric plus nearly 2 yards of trim. Today I have two easy throw pillow tutorials!Ĭute fabric, right? My Joann Fabrics has been getting lots of nice quilting cottons in lately.
